Singapore Democrats

In an interview with the Worker's Party (WP) organising secretary Mr Yaw Shin Leong, Today reported that WP “lays claim to being the first political party here to use Twitter to send out updates and mobilise supporters,” saying that the WP's first Twitter message was posted 11 days before the SDP's on 10 Nov 08.

This is untrue. The SDP started Twittering on 28 Apr 08, seven months before the WP.

While the Singapore Democrats are more interested in how effectively a communication tool is employed rather than who is the first to use what, facts are facts and wrong is wrong.

Not only is the SDP the first to use Twitter, it has also expanded its reach using the technology with more than 500 followers and nearly 400 updates to date, compared to 48 followers and 27 updates of the WP.

It is not difficult to check when the Singapore Democrats started to use the technology. A simple search on this website would show our use of Twitter on 1 May 08.

In fact the Singapore Democrats and Friends of SDP have been using the various cyber tools such as Twitter, Digg and Facebook (FS and YD) to reach out to Singaporeans. Dr Chee Soon Juan also has his Facebook sites (here and here).

This is not the first time that inaccurate claims have been made about the Singapore Democrats and our operations. Several weeks ago, Today's Mr Loh Chee Kong also reported in a bias fashion an interview he conducted with Mr Chiam See Tong. When we wrote to rebut the points Mr Loh made, the newspaper's editor would only publish our reply on its online edition when Mr Loh's story appeared in the print edition. (See here)

The party has written to Today to ask for a correction on its Twitter story.

Editor, Today

Dear Sir,

Your report It's the message, not the platform said that the WP's “first [Twitter] message was posted on Nov 10 — 11 days before the Singapore Democratic Party.”

This is not true. The SDP started Twittering on 28 Apr 08, seven months before the WP. We now have more than 500 followers and nearly 400 updates, compared to 48 followers and 27 updates of the WP.

Please correct your report. Thank you.

Sincerely,
Singapore Democratic Party
