KANGAROO T-SHIRT TRIAL: TRIO TO GET MORE PREP TIME

Ansley Ng

THE three men accused of holding a court in contempt by wearing T-shirts of a kangaroo dressed in a judge's robes have been given more time to prepare their defence.

Singapore Democratic Party (SDP) assistant secretary-general John Tan and activists Isrizal Mohamed Isa and Muhammad Shafi'ie Syahmi Sariman yesterday put their requests to Justice Judith Prakash in the High Court.

Mr Tan and Mr Isrizal said they needed to engage lawyers to help them fight the contempt of court charges, while Mr Muhammad Shafi'ie ¡ª represented by lawyer Chia Ti Lik ¡ª said he needed time to prepare for his defence.

In May, the trio had turned up at the Supreme Court to show their support for SDP secretary-general Dr Chee Soon Juan, who was at a hearing for a defamation lawsuit filed by the Prime Minister and Minister Mentor. The three were not allowed in the courtroom because of their T-shirts, and the Attorney-General's Chambers (AGC) applied to start contempt of court proceedings against them.

Mr Tan was also accused of posting a photograph of the trio wearing the T-shirts on the SDP website. The AGC said their actions meant to imply that the Court was a "kangaroo court".

Representing himself yesterday, Mr Isrizal told the judge he had consulted three lawyers but had yet to find one willing to act for him.

"I am a lay person. I do not fully understand court procedures and I am in need of legal help," he said, asking Justice Prakash to give him a month to find a lawyer.

Mr Tan, a lecturer, also sought an extension as there was a "possibility" that he would engage a lawyer. Mr Chia said he had no time to prepare for the case, as both his client and him were involved in a separate case, in which they were charged for taking part in a protest outside Parliament House.

Justice Prakash granted a short adjournment to Nov 24.

fattie john clashes with chia? no wonder CRAZY DRAGON DEADLY 18 BLOW couldn't be executed to perfection. there seem to be internal conflicts even at the beginning.

without chiatilik, there is always a DENNIS CHUA. why everyone thinks when there is a queue, thing that is selling should be good?

don't forget dennis already saved ngejay $2k. he paid only $600 fine and that amount was from gabramen's angpow some more. theoretically, ejay didn't lose anything. maybe the leegal fees which hopefully was cheaper than his fine.
