4. Why does the Government want to call a snap election?
1. Recalling the events of 2001, the government, which usually hides bad news, decided to "frighten" people by playing up how dire the situation was.... the electorate got so frightened they voted in the PAP with an increased popular vote majority, reversing the trend of the previous few GEs. I believe the PAP is adopting a similar strategy this time... frighten the electorate into voting for them (since unfortunately, the Singapore electorate seems to believe that only the PAP can save them)! Also, once the election is over, the govt can then cut CPF rates, and introduce a whole slew of measures, knowing that the population has short memories and will forget everything in time for the following GE! 3. This recession is different from the last few recessions and more jobs will be lost. If USA recovers from this recession this year, then no snap election will be held. However, if USA goes into a deep recession or depression, then a snap election will be held. Thu, 3/5/09 10:04 PM

7. With the economic crisis, the govt would call for a snap election to capitalise on the opportunity presented to them now. Thu, 3/5/09 7:45 PM

3. It depends because the Govt cannot predict how long and deep this recession will be and it is safer to call a snap election as things still looks good, particularly the opening of the two IRs Thu, 3/5/09 10:04 PM
