Here's a history of Sam's alfresco coffeeshop forum, from delphi to vbulletin as i recall it. Please feel free to correct inaccuracies.

I was mostly a lurker in sam's old delphi forum., posting like, a few times a month only, and not on political issues.
Back in 2007, Samleong surprised forummers by floating the idea of shifting his delphi forum to a private sever. He started a thread on it, in an attempt to "solicit feedback".
Sam gave two specific reasons for moving the forum: (a) complete autonomy with regard to forum management like blocking spammers, control of content, use of reputation point system, etc, and (b) control over the advertisements that appear. In those days, Sam spent his time governing the forum, but all ads that appeared were delphi ads, which gave delphi revenue.
Feedback as I recall was mixed. Some were in favour of moving but many others had grown used to the delphi platform and did not want to change. After a few hundred postings, the issue was not raised again.
Looking back, I realized Sam was "testing water" in preparation for an eventual departure. I feel that back in 2007, he had actually already made up his mind to move.
At that time, it was also the time of the "warring states". A few factions were fighting each other. Some claimed to be from WP, some claimed to be SDP supporters.
People were attacking each other, and TOC/Remy Choo/Andrew Loh was dragged in as well. Most people regarded it as part and parcel of forum experience, but genuine harm came out of that mudslinging.
One harm that materialized was the mudslinging directed at Goh Meng Seng which resulted in the New Paper printing an article on his alleged "adultery". That article was pointless, baseless, and wholly unnecessary, but one side effect was that it gave the attackers much more incentive to continue their antics.
Another harm that emerged was the exposing of Yaw Shin Leong's voting for PAP in the last GE. The exposure of this was orchestrated by some of the nicks involved in the "warring states" conflict. It was not easy on Yaw. His article on voting Teo Ho Pin appeared several times in New Paper and Straits Times, and his online detractors grew. Yaw's political career sank to the bottom of the ocean.
A third harm that came out of the mudslinging was the banning of nicks. Some nicks were banned, including nicks from the SDP side as well as a few neutral nicks. After that, people started become paying members and retaliated by banning other nicks.
The first tipping point I believe came from an infamous moniker "leetahbar" who bragged online that he beat up his father and took money from his younger sister. Leetahbar also made many personal attacks on forummers and was avidly anti-SDP.
Leetahbar's detractors attacked him for this, posting screenshots of his blog, and picture of pigs, and unfortunately this drew in all the "warring states" factions into the mess. In the end, it was a free for all war, escalated by none other than leetahbar.
After leetahbar become the centre of attention, the banning of nicks escalated and eventually grew out of control.
For example, group A will ban group B's nicks, and group B will then retaliate by banning group A's nicks. It was absolute mayhem.
Other people (notably Kojakbt who now heads the 3in1kopitiam) became paying nicks also in order to avoid being banned.
If I can blame one person for the closure of delphi, it would be leetahbar, as he seemed to be most notorious trouble-maker.
The second tipping point was people like leetahbar posting pictures of anuses which caused Sam's delphi site to be classified as an adult site. Once that happen, searching for old forum posts became impossible because posts are no longer indexed. Traffic also decreased over time.
It also did not help that people like Robox were threatening to make police reports over racist remarks in the forum.
In the end, the choice was obvious. Samleong chose to move the forum to a vbulletin hosted on his private server, and never looked back.

as the events slowly unfolded....their deadly kungfu skills intensified in leaps and bounds. more martial arts clans, sub-clan and other cling-cling-clan-clans were formed. ninjas, turtles, spammers, stalkers and snakes were deployed to seek and destroy whoever bold enough to expose them.

SDP's powderful smoking bombs
there they go again! calling for wu-lin meet at honglim hill. really looked like a prelude to the grand GE martial arts competition which was speculating among the peasants which was held once every 5 years.
john the baptist - the one who exploited MERRY X'MAS for a "rebel against the gov" festive message was getting shinier with his go-green light bulb baldy . then it was followed by siti, a bersilat bitchy exponent. next was the bersilat ah beng, jufrie which was trying a fortune-telling comparison. another botak appeared. a newbie reputated from indo. what? wait a minute!! an indo in our shore?? indo converted peesailander and cursing the gov who bestowed his naturalisation? priceless!! but hopeless with all the wrong biased facts.

Ling & Cheo lost not because of bad management of Town Councils nor poor performance in parliament. The lost because of internal fighting within SDP.
Voters lost faith in SDP after Chiam and the rest of SDP CEC fought openly. That was disastrous.
Ramseth is right that SDP used to be the strongest party in Singapore with a group of graduates and eloquent speakers. WP was unable to attract that kind of candidates as compared to SDP and to some extend, NSP. But the main difference was that NSP could not perfrom in spite of its good slate of relatively well educated candidates while SDP, under Chiam's leadership, was able to make gains in 1991.
The trouble only started when Chiam and the rest broke off. This is partly due to Dr. Chee's entrance into the party and started the hunger strike. For whatever reasons there were, the damage to the party was tremendous after Chiam and other SDP MPs (Ling & Cheo) started bickering even in parliament. The "don't talk cock" remark was made by Ling to Chiam.
There were strange reasons why the PAP's controlled parliament didn't disqualify Chiam from being MP after SDP CEC has practically "sacked" him. This is against the very rules that PAP has set. If court case is the reason, then they were contradicting and fast in dismissing JBJ from parliament even when he was appealing his case in Privy Council. What is worse is that JBJ was not reinstated as MP after he won his case in Privy Council!
There were also strange reasons why Dr. Chee was voted to replace Chiam after he resigned, since, in normal logical political wisdom, he should avoid taking up such post if he didn't want to be seen as the key person that "outsted" Chiam.
For a young person like me back then, all these seemed to be "staged" by someone to look silly. It was like a deliberate effort to allow the bickering to drag on for all Singaporeans to see. Maybe both Chiam, Chee and all others, had unknowingly played into such scheming.

soon juan was put into a very difficult position cos many wanted to engage him as secret weapon of shits destruction, ie, to singapore.
the foreigners cannot equate the tremendous success of singapore being such a dot and its vulnerablity. yet singapore has succeeded excellence in many fields which pissed off those evil red-eyed foreigners.
soon juan being the highly intelligent stooge succumbs to their monetary tempting rewards. while most opp leaders would aim to win wards and get into parliament, s j only seeks the reverse so that he could exploit that as "valid" but falsehod reason that he was marked by gov to see his destruction and that democracy and whatever craps he rants persistently as conjured to be true.
on the other hand, pap also tells cousin juan that if he succeeded in destroy all those wards held by SDP and return to pap's domination, a token of secret reward would be given to him.
juan now was very cunning. he wanted the pap's rewards and he also wanted the bigger foreign reward even more. with one stone 2 birds, he firstly tackled the issue of ridding chiam and returning the lost wards to pap. having down that and gotten his deserved reward, he now targeted at singapore and aim for the foreigner's bigger carrots if only he succeeds in bring down singapore.
embarrasing singapore also has its rewards but in the form of smaller tokens from the red-eyed devils. tokens sufficient enough to keep soon juan and his family relatively more well off than an average sgporeans. we ve seen cousin juan zipping around in a TOYOTA VIOS while non-bankrupt singaporeans get themselves squeezed in mrt n buses.
so just go think about my infallible cousin soon juan. u just got to admire my cousin. he so hardy he can outlive any cockroaches!

NO ONE shall be left behind.....screwed the lau peng!

the recent NDP speech by the pinky ruler of peesailand was simply amazing. 9K tael was hanging over for all new conscripts. what emperor pinky forgot to mention was: what about the lau pengs or the old soldiers?
peesailand might be just a little red dot but hell, it had great ambition. it wanna take over the world...or perhaps south east asia. ok fine. just the surrounding matland and indocunt would be sufficient to begin with.
hence, all the males in peesailand on reaching hairful puberty must be conscripted and be trained and mean killing machine. some were trained as mean sex machine and deployed to taiwan kao shiong where they were in complete gears - condoms, lubes and bonking instructions, rules, regulations and penalties thoroughly inclusive.
our poor lau pengs were now left out in the cold after their more arduous toiling part of their lives. the new conscripts were treated wtih utmost tender loving care. they were so precious due to the immensely successful family control program. yet they were quite fragile. they could easily fake fainting spell and do convincingly drop dead drama. sadly the drop dead most of the time ended with quite disastrous and fatal result in an authentic dropped dead precious only heir to a family.
9K tael now hang over new conscripts who survived their less regimented army ordeal. the lau pengs were pissed. they got nothing. they too had undergone more sadistic and maschoistic times with food the dogs wouldn't even eat! they got nothing. nothing at all.
the murmurings were getting louder among the peasants as most were the aged and were feeling dejected for getting nothing...the words of emperor pinky was still ringing loud and clear: NO ONE SHALL BE LEFT BEHIND. perhaps, the aged, sick and poor were the exception and might be quietly left behind to decay. the GE was getting near and nearer. would there be a mid-autumn revolution that repeat what happened during the ming dynasty?
