Cuffed, shackled and chained

Singapore Democrats
19 January 2010

They shuffled into the courtroom clothed in orange overalls labelled "Cluster B", cuffed, shackled and chained. Six guards surrounded them as they were led into the dock.

Their crime? Distributing flyers.

Mr. Gandhi Ambalam and Dr. Chee Soon Juan are serving a one-week prison sentence after they were convicted of assembly without permit because they had distributed flyers that were critical of the Government in a group of six persons.

Ms. Chee Siok Chin was similarly treated two weeks ago when she served her jail term for the same conviction. She was transported to court in a high-security prison van that consisted of a small, dark, windowless, claustrophobic compartment the size of a coffin with all four limbs chained together.

But even before they could finish their sentences they were brought back to court to answer yet to more charges for illegal assembly. In court, Dr. Chee stood up to address the judge on three points. He said:

1. New prisoners are not given "yard" time for exercise for up to a week. This means that prisoners are locked in for 24 hours a day.

2. The lights in the cells are not turned on making the cells very dark and dingy.

3. He had brought in a book but was not allowed to take it into the cell until "clearance was given".

District Judge Chia Wee Kiat said that he would inform the prison authority of the issues.

Even in the dock, the wardens refused to remove the restraints until DJ Chia Wee Kiat ordered the cuffs to be removed. However, their ankles were still shackled and fastened to the bench. Ms. Chee asked the judge to remove the shackles on the feet of Mr. Ambalam and Dr. Chee. "Speaking from personal experience the shackles on the feet cause much pain as they cut into the ankles."

She went on to cite the Standard Minimum Rules for the Treatment of Prisoners Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights before DJ Chia. She read out section 33 which states:

Instruments of restraint, such as handcuffs, chains, irons and strait-jackets, shall never be applied as a punishment. Furthermore, chains or irons shall not be used as restraints. Other instruments of restraint shall not be used except in the following circumstances:

(a) As a precaution against escape during a transfer, provided that they shall be removed when the prisoner appears before a judicial or administrative authority;

Ms. Chee asked DJ Chia to order the shackles on their feet removed as "these men posed absolutely no security threat whatsoever" and that the judge had absolute discretion and jurisdiction in his court. Mr. Jufrie Mahmood, a co-defendant added that the shackles on Mr. Ambalam and Dr. Chee was an overreaction by the authorities as the two men are not common criminals and should not be treated as such. They are victims of blatant violation of human rights by the PAP Government.

After hearing these applications the judge directed Mr. Ambalam and Dr. Chee to be placed in another dock that had bars all around it, and the restraints to be removed.

Mr. Ambalam who is on medication for a heart problem also told the judge that the doctor in Changi Remand Prison was not following the prescription given by his specialist. The prison doctor had insisted that Mr. Ambalam consumes all his different pills at one go whereas the medicines were to be taken at prescribed times. The prison doctor's insistence that Mr. Ambalam takes all his pills at the same time contradicts that which is prescribed by the specialist shows a total disregard for the safety of his patient.

Is this how a confident government treats political opponents?

remarks: they are no opponents for this instance. they are criminals convicted of breaking the law.

saikongseng challenges malboro tan

nsp clan of senior kungfu brothers or shi xiongs (unfortunately, saikongseng wasn't in the pic)

saikongseng the hooleey molly of the pugilistic world had finally master some ingenious deadly kungfu feat. he was proposing to have a showdown with paps greatest moneymaker, malboro tan who was by the way the shortest but the craftiest and shrewdest in milking peasants dry of every drop of blood and cum.

malboro tan's speciality was building pigeonholes for the peasants and pricing it it at exorbitant prices. the record could be 700K taels in gold for a pigeonhole in airspace with ownership of 99 yrs lease.

it was a devious and ingenious conning scheme to zap off peasants' hard-earned retirement fund called CPF or Con People Fee. since its name had a "con" word, to zap out peasants' saving couldn't be obsecenely conducted. hence, the construction of pigeonholes to successfully and leegally filtered out the saving without appearing obscenely obvious.

Leegime was so clever. after conning of peasants' fund, peasants still should be grateful to them cos all pigeonholes were supposed to be "heavily subsidised". if it wasn't, then many would either be sleeping out or still living in tattered attap houses.

10,000 ...10,000 ....10,000 years, long live our famiLEE!!

NSP sec-gen: 'It's not about Mr Mah or me'
Tampines GRC battle is over policy, not personalities
by Teo Xuanwei 05:55 AM Feb 01, 2010SINGAPORE - A day after National Development Minister Mah Bow Tan responded to one of the opposition's election strategies - and that is to target him on housing policy issues - the National Solidarity Party has clarified that the fight was over his policy decisions, and not over personalities.

"As Mr Mah pointed out correctly, it's not about Mr Mah or about me, but his HDB policy, which will affect this generation, the next generation and future generations," NSP's newly-elected secretary-general Goh Meng Seng told MediaCorp yesterday.

"It's not because I dislike him. I have nothing against him."

The 39-year-old businessman also said Mr Mah should justify his comments on Saturday that HDB's policies are for the "good of the people".

"As MM Lee said, Mr Mah should fight his own battle. He's a seasoned politician who has fought many electoral battles, and I have high respect for him." he said.

He was referring to Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew's comments at a housing conference last week, where he said if Mr Mah was unable to defend his housing policy, "he deserves to lose" at the next General Election.

Mr Goh agreed, and said, "Voters have to make an informed choice, so politicians have to defend their policies, especially if they're unpopular. Let people judge for themselves, simple as that.

"If he wants to have a debate, I can do it anytime. It's up to him."

The five-member group representation constituency of Tampines, which is helmed by Mr Mah, is a potential battleground that several opposition parties are eyeing in the next election. Besides the NSP, there are indications that the Workers' Party (WP), the Singapore Democratic Party (SDP) and the Reform Party (RP) may weigh in as well.

Asked to rate NSP's chances at the elections - it has been unsuccessful in four previous attempts - Mr Goh said matter-of-factly: "It's up to us to convince constituents that Mr Mah's decisions are not good.

"If we fail to do that, we deserve to lose. Nobody owes us anything."

The WP's organising secretary Yaw Shin Leong said no decision has been made as yet whether it will contest Tampines GRC.

The RP said "it is not interested in Tampines at the moment," while SDP could not be reached for comment.

JJ hitting his own balls!

SDP Activist Ng E Jay hits at Reform Party

Singapore Democratic Party activist Ng E Jay poured cold water on the Reform Party, in a letter to the Straits Times forum, saying it's "no big deal" for a former government scholarship holder, Mr Tony Tan, to join the Reform Party.

In Ng E Jay's letter, he said that the recent news report on a former government scholarship holder joining the Reform Party as a "non-event".

He also betrayed the opposition by agreeing with Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong's assessment that "we should not judge political candidates based on their paper credentials, but on what they can do for society."

Perhaps referring to Mr Tony Tan from Reform Party, Ng E Jay continued to state that "It is time we look past superficial measures of success like academic credentials, and pay more attention to an individual's track record at work and in community service, which are more accurate indicators of his calibre."

Ex-scholarship holder in opposition? No big deal

I REFER to the report on a former government scholarship holder joining an opposition party ('Ex-Admin Service officer joins Reform', Jan 20).

While some have hailed this as a significant plus for the opposition, I view it as a non-event.

First, many talented graduates have joined the ranks of the opposition in recent years, but many of them have opted to keep out of the spotlight, preferring to build a credible profile first. For example, Workers' Party secretary-general and Member of Parliament for Hougang, Mr Low Thia Khiang, mentioned recently that his party has been recruiting new members, many of whom are probably academically well qualified.

Second, I agree with Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong's assessment that we should not judge political candidates based on their paper credentials, but on what they can do for society. Using Mr Lee's yardstick, I judge many opposition candidates favourably as they provide an alternative voice for the people, regardless of their qualifications. In fact, good grades are irrelevant to being a good politician, as the work of serving the community requires the heart more than the head.

It is time we look past superficial measures of success like academic credentials, and pay more attention to an individual's track record at work and in community service, which are more accurate indicators of his calibre.

actually ngejay is slapping himself left, right, centre and below. yep! his groin area. LOL!
he is the undisputed infamous kaixin1 the geylang cheongster and at the same time a phd scholar reimbursed by sgp gov.
if a cheongster is anything "good character", then the gov would be wasting resources in nurturing him.
but becos the brilliantness of the mind and the personal character are separate issue, talent is what our gov is concerned about.
but talent is a 2-edges sword. it can help better the life of people or it could be misuse and abuse to mislead the masses into prejudiced and wrongful impression about the gov.
this is ludicrous! gov nurturing a scholar who in turn bites the hand that feeds him.

Jaslyn Go :I am much better than Ti Lik and E-jay

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Last Day of TBT Trial and I Am So Proud of Myself

28th January 2010 was a special day to me.

This was the day when the TBT trial finally came to the end. Prosecution and defendants have both closed their cases and what is left is submission from both sides which is due on 25th February 2010, and judgment will be on 8th March 2010.

I am so proud of myself for having the perseverance to stay on the trial till the end despite the objections, ‘threats’, and the lack of support from family and some of my close friends.

I am so proud that I have overcome this trial without any legal counsel to represent me and having to do my own cross-examination which was daunting for me as this was the first time I was charged in court.

I am also proud that despite having E-Jay and Ti Lik leaving the trial, I am able to hold my own fort and persevere till the end. My persistence has surprised many of our activist friends and it is always interesting to have them come up to me to tell me how I shocked them.

Martyn once told me that unlike others who start from beginner to intermediate, mine was a straight jump to intermediate. How true. Unlike many who are still struggling to overcome their fears, I was forced to address my fear when I was first faced with the police investigations and thereafter the charge. The long drawn trial was really a challenge, not just because of having to sit through the trial, but having to juggle sending and picking up my kids from school.

I remember someone once told Dr Chee that this TBT trial is a good way to sieve out the leaders from the followers. At that time, I was rather offended by this statement because my good buddy E-Jay has chosen to plead guilty at the very start of the trial which I empathize with, and to me, E-Jay has every quality to be a leader.

However, on hindsight, I came to realize that it does hold certain truth in it. It does not mean that those who stay on are definitely of leaders’ quality, but I know real leaders will be able to withstand the test of time and will never be a quitter despite the adversity faced. To this, I give my utmost respect to Dr Chee, Gandhi, Siok Chin, John and Jufrie Mahmood who have been through many more trials than us, but have never given up. These are the leaders who when they called upon me, I will willingly follow.

Come 8th March 2010, I will face with the possibility of a a hefty fine which is taxing for a mother of 2 young children, but this is the price I am prepared to pay for standing up not only for myself, my family but also to my fellow citizens against the rising cost of living in Singapore, standing up to the rights of citizens to speak up for what they believe in, standing against a autocratic government who do not respect our Singapore Constitution and the rights of their citizens.

They can charge me, fine me, but they should not take that right away from me.
